Maldives
Maldives Overview
With over 1,000 idyllic islands, the Maldives offers eye-catching lagoons, beautiful white sand beaches, and stunning underwater coral gardens. Famous for its exceptional diving opportunities, the Maldives is home to three-quarters of the world's reef fish. Add incredible luxury hotels, flawless service, and world-class spas, and it's clear why holidays to the Maldives are the perfect romantic getaway.
Natural Beauty and Exotic Charm
The Maldives, with its sugar-white beaches, lush vegetation, unspoiled lagoons, and tranquil atolls, remains exotic and mysterious. When planning a visit, consider whether you prefer the warm and sunny summers or the cooler and wetter rainy seasons.
Climate & Weather
Understanding the climate is key to deciding the best time to visit. The Maldives has a tropical climate, characterized by hot, humid, and dry weather, dominated by monsoons. The southwest monsoon brings rain from July to August, while the northeast monsoon brings rain from November to March. The dry season, from December to April, is ideal for sun-seekers and is one of the busiest times of the year.
Best Time to Visit
Winters in the Maldives are pleasant with sunny weather and cool breezes. Christmas is a popular and busy time to visit, with activities like beach games, volleyball, sauna, and table tennis. The period from May to November is also good for diving and snorkeling, as the water clarity and visibility are high, despite the high humidity and chance of rainfall. During this time, tourists can enjoy water sports like jet-skiing, windsurfing, diving, and snorkeling.
Maldivian Cuisine
Maldivian cuisine offers a wide range of delicious dishes, from seafood to vegetarian options. Fish and seafood are central to the cuisine, with dishes featuring trevallies, tuna, and barracuda served with various curries. Local wines and Western beverages complement the meals. Influences from Indian and Sri Lankan cuisines are evident, but Maldivian dishes retain a unique flavor. Local desserts made from tropical fruits complete the Maldivian dining experience, which can be enjoyed on the tranquil beaches.
Culture of the Maldives
The culture of the Maldives is diverse and colorful, with roots in the traditions of various communities. Dhivehi is the most commonly spoken language, and Islam plays a significant role in Maldivian culture. Festivals based on the traditional Muslim calendar, like Ramadan and Kuda Eid, are celebrated with enthusiasm.
Tourists can explore local cemeteries with carved tombstones, shop for souvenirs in bustling bazaars, and witness the craftsmanship of boat building. Local music, folk performances, and calligraphy at local mosques are also cultural highlights.
History
The Maldives were first settled in the 5th century B.C. by Buddhist monks from India and Sri Lanka. Islam was adopted in 1153. The islands were under Sri Lankan control before becoming a British protectorate in 1887. They gained independence from Britain on July 26, 1965. The Maldives transitioned between a sultanate and a republic, finally establishing a republic in 1968. Significant political changes occurred in 1978 with the progressive leadership of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and in 2008 with the election of Mohamed Nasheed.
Tourist Attractions
The Maldives is famous for its water sports, lush green islands, white sand beaches, rich cultural and folk heritage, and numerous tourist spots. With 1,190 islands, including 200 inhabited ones and 88 with luxury resorts, the Maldives offers a fantastic tropical experience.
Places to See
Key attractions include:
• National Museum in Malé: A place to explore Maldivian history.
• Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Center: Architectural and cultural landmarks.
• Recreational options at various atolls: Water sports and relaxation.
• Kudahuvadhoo, Fuamulaku, and Baa Atoll: Must-see destinations with unique features.
• Exotic spas: Offering unparalleled relaxation experiences.
Transfers
Transfers in the Maldives are either by speedboat or seaplane. Seaplanes operate only during daylight hours, so late-night or early-morning arrivals may require an overnight stay at the airport hotel or Kurumba. Adverse weather conditions can also affect transfer timings.
Resorts
Resorts in the Maldives are situated on separate islands, offering an exotic blend of modern luxury and isolated serenity. Each resort has soft sandy beaches, clear lagoons, and house reefs teeming with marine life. Despite their similarities, each resort island has its unique charm, character, and ambiance that can best be appreciated through personal experience.
